Siena vs Marist College Basketball Betting Preview
The Marist Red Foxes are 8-1 in MAAC play. John Dunne has done an excellent job with this roster.
Anchored by center Jackson Price and stock-stuffing forward Jaden Daughtry, Marist’s drop-coverage defense has been impenetrable this season. MAAC opponents are shooting under 40% from the interior, and the Red Foxes own the league’s lowest 3-point rate allowed (32%).
You can't get to the rim or create high-quality catch-and-shoot opportunities against Marist, making it challenging for anyone to generate high-efficiency offense.
The only way to beat Marist is through on-ball middle-of-the-court dribble penetration. So, can Siena do that?
Im partial to saying yes. Justice Shoats, a 5-foot-11 point guard, is a rock-solid ball-screen orchestrator for a good perimeter pick-and-roll offense (.90 pick-and-roll ball-handler PPP allowed, 88th percentile, per Synergy). The Saints can and will create from the mid-range.
But Siena’s offense is still limited, and the Saints own the league’s highest 3-point rate (46%). It could be challenging for them to get those shots off against the league’s best 3-point-denial defense.
On the other end of the court, Marist runs a rim-oriented offense behind the electric backcourt trio of Josh Pascarelli, Jadin Collins-Roberts and Elijah Lewis.
The Red Foxes earn switches off handoffs before attacking in isolation, and the other guards will cut off the ball. Altogether, Marist leads the MAAC in paint points per game (33).
Meanwhile, Siena’s interior defense is a mess, partially because the perimeter defenders are undersized and exploitable. The Foxes’ guard trio could eat off the dribble en route to the rim.
Marist swept the season series last year, winning the home matchup by 16. I’m banking on more of the same.
