Stephen F. Austin vs Oregon College Basketball Betting Preview
Oregon hosts Stephen F. Austin for an interesting Sunday matchup. Can the Lumberjacks chop down the trees that decorate the Ducks’ elaborate home floor?
The good news for SFA is Oregon has played with its food consistently this season. While the Ducks are 9-1 and well on their way to an NCAA Tournament berth, the wins have not been comfortable.
Portland led Oregon by 13 with just over eight minutes to play, ultimately falling short in overtime. Oregon State led by 12 in the second half before losing by three. A&M led by 10, Alabama by seven and USC by 11. You get the picture.
But SFA has been a shell of its usual self. Normally a dominant mid-major program, the Jacks have limped to a 0-2 Southland start and have dropped some puzzling games to inferior competition.
The anemic offense has been the culprit — SFA ranks just 349th in the nation in adjusted offensive efficiency and sports the second-worst turnover rate.
Oregon isn’t incredible at forcing turnovers, but Dana Altman likes to throw some trapping zones at opposing ball handlers, which should be enough to force SFA to cough up the rock.
SFA’s only strength on offense is the glass, ranking 15th in rebounding rate. Oregon has been vulnerable on the boards, and a sleepy effort (why would it be up for this game?) could result in some easy second chances for the Jacks.
On the other end, look for the Ducks to play through the post and ride the hot starts of star guards TJ Bamba and Jackson Shelstad. The talent on this roster is overwhelming, and it will take a mondo effort for SFA to keep it close.
Defense is the calling card of SFA — this team works its ass off, forces turnovers and makes it a pain to score against inside the arc.
Again, if there is any sleepiness to Oregon’s game, SFA will take advantage.
Expect SFA to slow this game to a crawl and make it a war. Kyle Keller is a smart coach — he knows his team is limited offensively and can’t compete with Oregon from a talent perspective.
SFA should be the far more motivated squad and annoy the Ducks on the defensive end.
In a game with a huge spread, value could be on the ‘dog.
