Stony Brook vs Hampton College Basketball Betting Preview

Sometimes in the mid-major ranks, the difference between two teams comes down to experience or simply one true star.

In the case of Hampton, its depth isn't great, but it has former West Virginia guard Noah Farrakhan on its roster. The senior leads the team in points (13.6), assists (2.7) and steals (1.4).

The Pirates have ridden his success to a 15-13 record, including a current middle-of-the-pack position in the CAA standings.

Farrakhan's presence should be enough to guide Hampton to a win, but will it be enough to beat Stony Brook by margin?

The Seawolves have their own high-quality talent in CJ Luster II (16 PPG), but they haven't had their second-leading scorer — Joe Octave — since January 23.

I'm still banking on Stony Brook covering this spread, though, even on the road. Why? The Seawolves don't really get blown out despite their horrific 6-22 record (2-13 in the CAA).

Stony Brook's average margin of defeat in CAA games this year is 10 points — and even that's skewed by two early-season blowouts to Monmouth and Campbell.

The Seawolves lost to first-place Towson by a total of 11 points in two meetings and outscored second-place UNC Wilmington in the second half in the Seahawks' own building.

Stony Brook's slow tempo is one of the reasons it can keep games close, and I'm counting on that to continue here.

I know it doesn't seem smart to bet on a team with six wins and one that ranks 332nd in KenPom, but the trends favor the cover.
