Texas Tech vs. Saint Joe's College Basketball Betting Preview
This is a chance for both Texas Tech and Saint Joe's to notch a quality win on their early NCAA Tournament resumes.
Tech has looked like a juggernaut in the early going, smashing its four opponents by an average of 31.3 points per contest, albeit against less than stellar competition.
Saint Joe’s dropped an ugly one to Central Connecticut State, but it rebounded nicely to upend Villanova.
Both teams have a wealth of talent and potential to compete for crowns in their respective leagues.
Offensively, the Hawks rely on their dynamic guard play, led by Erik Reynolds II and Xzayvier Brown. Both ball handlers have gamebreaker potential and are liable to go off for 30 points on any given night.
Head coach Billy Lange spreads the floor and runs his talented guards off pick-and-rolls, allowing them to create with shooters flanking them on the wings.
Tech has shut down ball screens in the early going, but the Hawks’ attack will be the best it’s faced thus far.
Head coach Grant McCasland’s no-middle defense will look to jam up the paint and stop penetration, anchored by New Mexico transfer JT Toppin.
The Hawks will need to be opportunistic in transition and ready to shoot off drive-and-kicks. Nothing will come easy inside, meaning Lange and Co. will be heavily reliant on the long ball.
Tech has ramped up its offensive tempo this season, looking to score more in the open floor. Junior point forward Darrion Williams has been terrific keying the offense, which primarily runs through him and Toppin.
The Red Raiders have elite positional size, though Saint Joe’s does have the uber-versatile Rasheer Fleming, who the Hawks can stick on multiple assignments. Lange’s defense has never been his strong suit, and it’s unlikely his Hawks can slow down McCasland’s methodical, unwavering offensive attack.
Saint Joe’s is highly vulnerable on the glass, and Tech has plenty of shooting to keep perimeter defenders honest.
While Tech is the better team and could certainly exert its will, Saint Joe’s is no pushover. This will be the first top-200 team the Red Raiders have seen this season, and at least three Hawks could start for almost any program in the country.
If the outside shots are falling, Saint Joe’s can keep this one within double digits.
