Utah State vs UNLV College Basketball Betting Preview
With Dedan Thomas Jr. back, the Rebels were supposed to be a darkhorse team in the Mountain West. Instead, UNLV has been just average, failing to capitalize on all seven of its Quad 1 and 2 opportunities.
Meanwhile, Jerrod Calhoun is doing serious damage in his first season in Logan, as the Aggies are 16-1, including a perfect 4-0 in road games. Former Maryland and Utah guard Ian Martinez has been particularly lights out, averaging 16.8 points to lead the Aggies in scoring.
Based on those two paragraphs, you'd think the Aggies are an easy play. But I'm actually backing the Rebels in this one.
This is a nice situational spot for UNLV, as it's returning home after back-to-back blowout losses to Boise State and Colorado State. The Rebels are desperate for some type of quality win to turn their season around, and this is as strong of a chance as teams get in the Mountain West.
On the flip side, Utah State has won six straight. As great as it's been, at some point the Aggies' luck is going to turn around — they're 14th in KenPom's "Luck" metric.
Also, UNLV loves to capitalize on offensive rebounds (35th nationally in percentage of second-chance opportunities converted, via Haslametrics), while the Aggies are a below-average defensive rebounding team (251st nationally).
If the Rebels can utilize the glass to their advantage and Thomas is on his game, they'll have an advantage on the offensive end of the floor.
Most importantly, there's some value on this spread, with Bart Torvik favoring Utah State by only three points.
