Virginia vs Pitt College Basketball Betting Preview
The ACC has clearly had a down season. UNC already has 10 losses, big brands like Florida State, Notre Dame, Syracuse, Miami and Virginia have been terrible and Louisville lost two key pieces to season-ending injuries.
It's not even clear who the second-best team in the conference is, although it's looking more and more like Clemson.
Why I bring that up is because Pitt is currently sitting on the bubble. On Bracket Matrix, Pitt is considered an 11-seed in the NCAA Tournament while ESPN's Bracketology has the Panthers as one of the last four byes.
That means the Panthers can ill afford to flirt with disaster in a conference that has plenty of opportunities to burn a resume.
This is one of those opportunities, as Virginia sits 132nd on KenPom and in 15th place in the ACC.
So, even though Pitt has a huge bubble game vs. North Carolina on Saturday, it can't look ahead at this point in the season.
Another reason I like the Panthers is they have a huge coaching advantage with Jeff Capel over Ron Sanchez.
The former Charlotte coach, Sanchez, was thrown into the fire after Tony Bennett's sudden retirement right before the season — thus, the Cavs haven't produced their regular defensive results (127th in KenPom's defensive efficiency metric).
Virginia still plays slow (third-to-last nationally in adjusted tempo), but that hasn't deterred the team from its fair share of blowouts (15-point loss to Notre Dame, 23-point loss to Stanford, 14-point loss to Louisville, 14-point loss to Cal).
Pitt's experienced backcourt of Ishmael Leggett and Jaland Lowe has a huge advantage in this game, and it also helps us that Virginia is 284th in Haslametrics' away-from-home metric.
Give me the Panthers.
