My West Virginia vs Texas Tech NCAAB Betting Preview
The situational spot screams Red Raiders.
Texas Tech is due for a bounce-back win returning home after a tough road loss against TCU on Tuesday, while West Virginia could be in for a letdown after barely surviving Cincinnati on Wednesday.
In a clear motivational spot, you should see Texas Tech’s efforts on the boards.
The Red Raiders are an elite offensive rebounding squad, while the Mountaineers are weak at cleaning the glass — although, they’ve improved at second-chance point prevention during conference play.
I’m fascinated to see how Texas Tech fares against West Virginia’s drop coverage. The Raiders are at their best when working through JT Toppin and Darrion Williams in short-roll, hard-roll and pick-and-pop sets, but the Mountaineers will funnel more on-ball middle-of-the-floor creation.
That said, the Red Raiders are also elite off-the-bounce, as Chance McMillian, Elijah Hawkins and Christian Anderson are excellent on-ball creators. Plus, they don’t create much at the rim anyway, which negates half of what drop-coverage schemes do — take away rim-and-3 opportunities.
The Raiders had no issues against Cincinnati’s more athletic drop, scoring 81 points at well over 1.00 PPP. McMillian and Anderson combined for 35 points and five assists, while Toppin helped with 20 points on 9-for-15 shooting.
The Mountaineers are a ball-screen-centric offense behind the ever-elite Javon Small, but they rarely create at the rim and mostly want to beat opponents over the top.
The Red Raiders have had some issues stopping the dribble and can be exposed at the rim. But they’re an elite 3-point defense, so I don’t love this matchup for West Virginia’s offense — especially since the Mountaineers offense has been sketchy lately.
Ultimately, I don’t have a good read on this game, and the number seems right, so I’ll likely pass on this game altogether.
But if I had to pick a side, I’d lay the points with the Red Raiders, who have a decent matchup in a good situational spot.
