Xavier vs Georgetown College Basketball Betting Preview
Georgetown won 16 games over the last two seasons, including just nine in the first year of the Ed Cooley era in 2023-24.
This year, the Hoyas have made tangible progress in the second campaign of Cooley’s stint, as they’ve already posted 11 victories, with wins over Syracuse and Creighton coming last month.
But Georgetown’s schedule hasn’t exactly been murderer’s row.
In fact, the Syracuse win doesn’t standout on paper (the Orange are under .500 right now) and the Bluejays are a much different team away from home and lost Pop Isaacs for the season.
Georgetown is dealing with an injury to its leading scorer Jayden Epps. The former Illinois guard is day-to-day after injuring his ankle, creating some uncertainty with this handicap.
Like Georgetown, Xavier is dealing with its own injury issues. Zach Freemantle, the Musketeers’ leading scorer, is out indefinitely, Lassina Traore is also out for the season, and now Trey Green is a potential game-time decision for this one.
Regardless, I still think the Musketeers are the better team. Yes, the Hoyas have an advantage on the interior with Thomas Sorber, especially with Freemantle out, but the uncertainty of Epps and Xavier’s ability to shoot the long ball is the difference in this handicap.
The Muskeeters have a loaded backcourt that features Indiana State transfer Ryan Conwell, Dayvion McKnight, Marcus Foster, Dante Maddox Jr. and Dailyn Swain, meaning they can still spread the floor, create shots and hit from the perimeter even without Freemantle.
While the Hoyas’ progress this season has been impressive, I don’t know if I’m ready to consider them a consistent top-tier Big East team.
In fact, KenPom agrees with me that the Musketeers are the better team, as he currently has Xavier ranked 51st while Georgetown checks in at 66th.
Of course, home court is baked into the line — which is why the Hoyas are favored — but Capital One Area isn't exactly a groundbreaking advantage, and I don't consider these two teams near-even.
