Appalachian State Mountaineers football is coming off a 9-5 season, one in which the team made the Sun Belt Conference title game and won the Avocados from Mexico Cure Bowl, 13-9, over Miami (OH). Coach Sean Clark has high hopes for this year’s squad, so it’s no wonder the Mountaineers are +275 favorites in the Sun Belt odds for the 2024-25 season.

After opening the season at home against ETSU, the Mountaineers head to Clemson to take one of the top teams in the ACC, the national title odds board, and the college football betting power ratings. The Mountaineers biggest in-conference test of the season comes on Nov. 23 against defending Sun Belt champion James Madison on App State’s Senior Day, also known as Black Saturday. The winner of this contest is likely to host the Sun Belt Championship game on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Here’s how you can bet on App State this season, and some key things to know.

Betting on Appalachian State Football

There are lots of ways to bet on Appalachian State football this season. You can go with the aforementioned Sun Belt futures odds as well as college football win totals. The Mountaineers have an over/under win total of 6.5 on the many of the top sportsbooks.

You can also bet on the team's moneyline, point spread, and over/under throughout the 2024-25 season.

Betting Appalachian State’s moneyline

Appalachian State football went 9-5 on the moneyline last season, including the Mountaineers’ Avocados from Mexico Cure Bowl victory. Per our Bet Labs database, betting Appalachian State in every game moneyline would have produced a 9.2% ROI and a $129 win, if your unit size was $100 last season.

So how does a moneyline bet work? Here’s how it might look when the Mountaineers take on the Marshall Thundering Herd on Saturday, Oct. 5 at FanDuel or DraftKings:

  • Appalachian State -190
  • Marshall +160

The plus and minus signs signify the favorite (-) and the underdog (+), making App State the favorite in this scenario. A wager on the Mountaineers odds would mean you have to bet $190 to win $100. If you win, you get your stake back, plus $100 in profit. For the underdog, you risk $100 to win $160 on Marshall (plus you get your $100 back, if they win).

It’s not recommended for bettors to lay huge moneyline prices like -500 odds, but including a moneyline like that is common as a leg in a parlay, which combines multiple bets into a single bet slip to increase your potential payout. You can use our parlay calculator to get a better idea of what your payout looks like when you build a parlay. You can also add bets to your bet slip via our college football odds page to compare parlay prices on different online sportsbooks.

Betting point spreads with App State

You may also be interested in betting App State with the point spread. A spread is a bet on the margin of victory, with the favorite getting a handicap to even the playing field. Since the market adjusts based on the estimated ability of each team, Appalachian State is expected to be about .500 against the spread, as was the case last season when the Mountaineers went 6-5-1 ATS.

Here’s an example of point spread betting for when Appalachian State takes on the South Alabama Jaguars on Sept. 19 at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN. The Mountaineers have an implied win probability of 66.7% with a 6.5-point spread.

Here’s what the point spread looks like:

  • South Alabama +6.5 (-110)
  • Appalachian State -6.5 (-110)

The point spread has two parts to keep an eye on – the spread itself (the expected margin of victory) and the odds (your payout on the bet). In this example, Appalachian State is a 6.5-point favorite, meaning the Mountaineers need to win by at least seven points to cover the spread. Most spreads have -110 odds, meaning every $110 wagered wins $100.

If you’re unfamiliar with how betting odds work, read about how to use American odds or try out our odds calculator.

Betting the total for App State games

The third main sports betting market in CFB betting is the total, also known as the over/under. With an over/under total, you’re predicting whether or not the total number of points scored in a game will be higher or lower than what the sportsbook has listed.

When Appalachian State played James Madison on Nov. 18, 2023, the over/under total was listed at 56.5 with -110 odds on both sides. If you bet the over, you predicted that the game would have 57 or more total points scored. If you bet the under, anything less than 57 nets you a win.

  • Over: 56.5 (-110)
  • Under: 56.5 (-110)

With a 26-23 win for the Mountaineers, the under hit in this game. If you bet $110 on the under, you won $100.

Appalachian State player props & more

College prop bets vary by state, and they’re unavailable in some sports betting markets. The list of states with Appalachian State college football props remains in flux after several college sports betting scandals. If prop bets are available in your state, you’ll find markets for yardage over/unders for specific players (passing, rushing, receiving), touchdown props, and more.

Online sportsbooks offer fewer sports betting markets for college players than they will for the NFL for a variety of reasons. One of the most popular college football prop bets is the Heisman Trophy market, also known as a futures market.

If sports betting isn’t legal in your state or college football props aren’t offered, using a platform like PrizePicks is a great way to get in on the action. PrizePicks is regulated as DFS and allows you to predict if a player’s statistics will be more or less than the listed total. The more stats you combine, the bigger the payout.
