Rolling with Stafford here. Lions one of the top 3 teams in first half home scoring last season.
- Gibbs and Montgomery should have a field day on the ground and expect Stafford to play from behind.
- early in season like relying on proven commodities. Kupp/nucua both healthy heading into season + Williams out of backfield should help on dump offs.
- lions were a pass funnel last season and expect that to happen again this year. 54 total, let’s see some fireworks from McVay and Stafford in primetime

Joseph stayed under this line in 12/18 games last season. He moved around the formation - free safety 50% of the time, with roughly 25% at slot and 25% in the box. I expect his time as a deep safety to increase, as Brian Branch (last year’s slot corner) is going to play more strong/box safety this season, after the Lions revamped their CB room.
And I do expect the Lions to dominate the clock in this game.

Wish I had gotten the better number, but we just discussed on Convince Me that this line still might be too low. Lions have improved, Rams have question marks on o-line and d-line.

Matthew Stafford, returning to Detroit, has a personal stake in this game, and his ability to stretch defenses with his arm will be crucial. Last season, Stafford put up 3,965 passing yards with 24 touchdowns in 15 games, showcasing his resilience after injury concerns from the previous year. His top target, Puka Nacua, will be pivotal, especially after his 170-yard, 2-TD performance in last year's playoff game against the Lions. Kyren Williams also brings a dynamic rushing threat, coming off a strong finish last season. With the Rams averaging 23.7 points per game and ranking 7th in yards per play (5.6), they’re set to capitalize on a Lions defense that struggled at times in 2023.
The Lions, on the other hand, are coming off a highly successful 12-5 campaign. Their offense was explosive last year, averaging 27.1 points per game, which ranked fifth in the NFL. Jared Goff had one of his best statistical seasons, throwing for 4,575 yards and 30 touchdowns. Detroit’s passing attack, led by Amon-Ra St. Brown, Sam LaPorta, and a now-healthy Jameson Williams, should thrive against a Rams defense that will be adjusting to life without Aaron Donald, who retired in the offseason. Detroit also boasts one of the league’s most efficient offenses, ranking third in yards per play (5.9) and second in passing first downs per game (13.4). The return of Jahmyr Gibbs from injury further strengthens their offense, as the running back showed his versatility last year with 945 rushing yards and 316 receiving yards.
Defensively, neither team has a unit that will likely dominate this game. The Rams allowed 22.2 points per game last year (19th in the league), and losing Donald leaves a significant gap on their defensive line. The Lions were strong on the ground, but their passing defense struggled significantly, ranking second to last in the league. This weakness was evident throughout the 2023 season, and against a potent Rams passing attack, led by Stafford, Detroit could be vulnerable to big plays downfield. Both teams struggled to stop opponents consistently, and with two highly capable offenses, this game has all the makings of a scoring frenzy. The atmosphere in Detroit will be electric, adding to the likelihood of big plays and points.

- This game screams TRAP to me
- Lions finished #1 in the NFL last year against the spread, ending on a 6-1 run ATS
- All media outlets have shoved the narrative of “Jared Goff is the most profitable Week 1 QB in the last 20 years” down our throats
- After Thursday’s NFL game, right when the world really starts digging into Sunday NFL games, isn’t it funny how the Lions were the only team with line movement going from (-3.5) to (-4.5)? The sheep are being herded to follow the line movement. Don’t be a sheep. Take the Rams (+4.5) instead
- The Rams average MORE THAN 27 PPG over their last 4 matchups vs the Lions
- Give me the Rams (+4.5), on Sunday Night Primetime, because sometimes the best bets are sweaty before the game starts, but sometimes those are the best bets to take

This is a line that Montgomery covered in 13/16 full games last season. Yes, Jahmyr Gibbs is a threat to his workload, but coming off a hamstring injury in camp, I don’t see the Lions shifting off of their timeshare. Montgomery should continue to see most of the short yardage and red zone work. And the Lions will have a strong advantage in the trenches against the Rams, who ranked 20th in DVOA against the run last season, and lost one of their best run stuffers in Ernest Jones.
