Fading a running back’s receiving yards total when Tom Brady is at the helm is never a popular play. Brady has been peppering his running backs with passes since the early 2000s. Last season, Fournette was the beneficiary. The bruising back compiled 454 yards receiving and eclipsed this line in eight of his 14 games.
However, I believe Fournette’s role as a pass catcher was appointed to him by default. His now-former backup, Ronald Jones, was not an asset in the pass game, and Giovanni Bernard battled through injuries most of the season. In looking to improve on Fournette’s 6.6 yards per reception (49th out of 67 qualified running backs), Tampa Bay drafted Rachaad White in the third round, re-signed Bernard and retained Ke’Shawn Vaughn – all three of whom are proficient receivers.
With rumblings from Buccaneers beat reporters that the team will look to scale back Fournette’s snap count, it would make sense to spell him on passing downs given the new makeup of the running back room.
Dallas was also one of the best teams at defending running back receptions last season. The Cowboys ranked first in Football Outsiders' DVOA against running back receptions. They allowed the eighth-lowest percentage of receiving yards to the position (12.8%).
On Sunday night, I have Fournette projected at 22 receiving yards.
