Among the biggest storylines in the NFL this season is the Seahawks' offensive resurgence. Led by Geno Smith, Seattle ranks seventh in the NFL in points scored, including a whopping 80 over the last two weeks.
A big reason for this success is receiver Tyler Lockett. The perennially underrated receiver has recorded 406 yards through five games, good for ninth most in the NFL. He’s eclipsed this line in each of his last four games, showing a nice rapport with Smith.
Where Lockett excels is his efficiency. The eight-year veteran ranks seventh amongst qualifying receivers with 2.59 yards per route run. And despite an average depth of target of 13.5 yards (22nd deepest), he’s managed to haul in 80% of his targets. Coupled with his 25% target share, Lockett is seeing plenty of volume to boot.
On top of all that, this matchup is quite advantageous for the Seahawks’ receiver. The Cardinals’ pass defense ranks 27th in Football Outsider’s DVOA metric. Plus, both of these teams play fast, ranking in the top 12 of neutral game-script pace, per RotoViz. These factors have led to this game having the second-highest total on the board this week at 50.5 as of publishing.
Lockett put up 98 and 115 yards against Arizona last season, leading Seahawks pass catchers in both games. Showing no signs of slowing down despite a change at quarterback this season, I expect Lockett to keep the good times rolling on Sunday.
I have Lockett projected at about 80 yards and would play this over to 70.5.
