So, the books caught on to our open secret: Jalen Hurts likes to run the ball. After being able to continually get lines in the 8.5-9.5 range on Hurts’ attempts, sportsbooks have put out a 10.5 for the first time in his pro career.
Despite the landmark occasion, I’m still on the over tonight. Allow me to spell out why.
Firstly, the Eagles are calling more designed runs for Hurts. Including sneaks (but excluding kneels and fumbles), Hurts has had his number called 7.6 times per game, up from 4.8 last season.
Part of the reason for the increase is due to the Eagles' increased pace (71 plays per game is second in the NFL). But also, Hurts’ improvement as a passer has prevented defenses from stacking the box.
He’s also scrambling more — 4.6 per game compared to 3.3 last season. Against the Cowboys and their stellar pass rush, Hurts figures to be flushed out of the pocket more.
Throw in the always welcomed possibility of QB kneels, and we’re looking at multiple avenues to hitting the over on this prop.
Hurts has had at least 11 rushing attempts in four of his five games. In a primetime division matchup, I have the third-year quarterback projected at 12 rush attempts.
