The New York Giants' improbable playoff run has included many contributions from unlikely sources — wide receiver Richie James being one of them.
Billed as a return specialist over his tenure in the NFL, James’ 57 receptions is not only more than his previous career output, but it tied for the team lead with Saquon Barkley.
With several injuries leading him to a prominent role, James has been the primary receiver out of the slot for Big Blue, with an 80% slot rate on his offensive snaps.
The trust he’s built with Daniel Jones is apparent. Over his last six games with Jones, James has cleared this line four times, leading the team in receptions (34; 25% share) and targets (39; 20% share). In general, James has cleared this line in 5-of-7 games he’s played at least 70% of offensive snaps.
It’s no coincidence that his best game of the season (eight catches on 11 targets) came against the Vikings in Week 15. Minnesota cornerbacks have allowed the fifth-most receptions out of the slot this season.
The game should be played at a faster pace than the Giants' norm, as the Vikings register the sixth-lowest seconds per snap in neutral game scripts this season (per RotoViz) and allow their opponents the second-most team plays per game.
I expect head coach Brian Daboll to have his offense attack the Vikings through the air, which teams have been doing all season (60% pass plays against in neutral gamescripts — 4th highest in the NFL).
I have James projected for eight targets, which should translate into six catches. I’d play this line down to -125.
