There’s nothing like betting on a game between two teams playing purely for pride. Some call it the "Battle of Woe," but I find it thrilling. It’s even better when the matchup features two of the NHL’s budding young stars.
The Chicago Blackhawks probably knew what they were getting into this season, but losing is never fun. However, as the season winds down, it gives the organization a chance to evaluate its future.
On Monday, we witnessed the NHL debut of the 2024 Draft’s second overall pick, Artyom Levshunov, but all eyes will always be on Connor Bedard.
Although he has fared well against the Sharks in his short career, he has only recorded three points since returning from the 4 Nations break.
In fact, the team as a whole has struggled since Bedard’s return from the tournament. Chicago has been the worst 5-on-5 team in the NHL on both ends, with a 40.12 xGF% and a 3.08 xGA/60.
Chicago’s lone bright spot has been acquiring goaltender Spencer Knight from Florida in the Seth Jones trade. Knight has only appeared in three games, but he has already made an impact, winning two of them with a .933 SV%.
The record certainly doesn’t stand out, and San Jose hasn’t been winning much since the break. But what if I told you the Sharks are playing at a top-10 pace in 5-on-5 offense?
It sounds surprising, but according to EvolvingHockey, they rank ninth in expected goals with a 53.38 xGF%. Additionally, they’re 11th defensively, allowing just 2.48 xGA/60. Whatever coach Ryan Warsofsky is doing, the boys in teal are fully buying in.
Rookie sensation Macklin Celebrini is having an impressive first season, one that will almost certainly earn him a Calder Trophy nomination. Since February 23, he has recorded eight points, including four in his last four games.
William Eklund continues his upward trajectory, and it’s remarkable that his plus/minus sits at just -2—the best among Sharks forwards—as he develops into a legitimate two-way center.
There’s plenty of promise on this team, especially on the defensive end. I’m curious to see what the Sharks do with Mario Ferraro after the season, but beyond that, they have a solid core with Timothy Liljegren, Henry Thrun, and one of my favorite prospects, Shakir Mukhamadullin.
My biggest concern for the Sharks is their goaltending situation. If you’ve been following my coverage, you know how little faith I have in Alexandar Georgiev—and he’s continued to struggle. The net has been shared between him and Vitek Vanecek, but Vanecek was recently traded to Florida.
This could have been an opportunity for Yaroslav Askarov, but the young goalie is still recovering from injury. That means we’ll likely see Georgiev in the crease once again.

Blackhawks vs. Sharks
Betting Pick & Prediction
I actually have a ton more faith in San Jose’s future than I do with Chicago.
We’re seeing in real time how well the Sharks have done, and Celebrini has been incredibly dynamic. Not only that, Eklund’s trajectory is nothing but encouraging. If you watch #72 on the ice, he looks special. If you enjoy watching developing rosters as much as I do, you’d want to take a look at how he plays.
Goaltending and special teams may have a big effect on this game. While I love what the Sharks are doing, if Knight starts for Chicago, and San Jose rolls out Georgiev, it could be game over.
San Jose is better in every facet of 5-on-5 play, but Chicago has the upper hand on special teams and goaltending. Its penalty kill succeeds at an 81% pace, and the power play is seventh in the league at 25%.
That could be detrimental to the Sharks, who commit the ninth most penalties per 60 minutes.
We’ll see closer to puck drop if Knight starts or if Chicago opts for Arvid Soderblom, but this game is most certainly a pick ‘em.
However, I’m rolling with the Sharks. The Blackhawks are dreadful on the road, and while San Jose is no prize, it’s playing at such an efficient 5-on-5 pace. Additionally, even though Knight has been lethal, the only loss he suffered as a Blackhawk was on the road.
