Still, we've got the red-hot Capitals, who have won four straight games, against the Flyers, who are winless since an opening-night shootout victory. The Flyers' skid included last night's 4-1 loss to the Capitals in Philadelphia.
Now, we head to Washington, D.C., as the Caps get their turn to play host.

Flyers vs. Capitals Pick for Total

After a wild Frozen Frenzy night, we’re back at it with the second round of the Flyers vs. Capitals. This time in Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.
Despite what the records say, these are two evenly matched teams with a little bit of nastiness, as we saw last night. However, barring any last-minute changes, both teams are most likely rolling out their backup netminders tonight, which is the perfect recipe for the over.
Logan Thompson of the Capitals is incredibly hit or miss. He showed when he was in Vegas that when he was hot, he was unstoppable. However, when he was struggling, he couldn’t stop a beach ball.
So far, the Thompson experience in our nation’s capital has been fine. In two starts, he’s let up seven goals on 50 shots faced – one being a win against the Devils in which he let up five.
For Philly, Ivan Fedotov looks as rough as you can get. Allowing 10 goals on 55 shots faced is an ugly stat, and I can see Washington licking its chops. Additionally, he has one of the worst goals saved above expected with a -3.9 GSAx. For context, the leader in that category is Lukas Dostal, with a 6.7 GSAx.
If you read last night’s version of best bets, you’ll see I mapped out these two teams. Both teams are mediocre offensively and mediocre defensively – just this time, we have suspect goaltending.
Bank on more than a few pucks getting past, and let’s have ourselves a red-light party in D.C.

Capitals Futures Bet

The Capitals looked like a boom-or-bust side entering this year. Essentially every offseason acquisition was somewhat of a reclamation project.
So far, all of those bets are paying off, and that should help people see the brilliance of Spencer Carbery.
I mean, who's drawn such inspired play out of Pierre-Luc Dubois?
Through five games, the Capitals are 4-1-0 with a 56.31% expected goal share. They have played a far tougher-than-average schedule too; their win last night in Philly was their only game against a team that will likely miss the playoffs.
Five games is a small sample, and the Caps will surely look more mortal in time. Still, I gave this out in the summer at 20/1, and I am pretty surprised – given the Capitals' starts – to see DraftKings is still hanging +1800 for Carbery to win the Jack Adams Award as Coach of the Year.
A 3-2-0 record over their next five games looks realistic based on the Caps' schedule. If that happens and they arrive at the 10-game mark 7-3-0, I bet we will see this market swing pretty heavily.
We'll take futures pick now at +1800, and I'd bet it down to +1500.
