MGM. It’s an ambitious line for Heaney, who is 0/3 on this line so far. Velocity and spin rate are down, and he’s been very inefficient with his pitches (4.4 pitches per PA would be 4th out of 120 starters if he qualified). He will still get strikeouts, but at the expense of driving his pitch count up. Oaklands offense isn’t great, but they don’t chase (9th lowest swing rate on out of the zone pitches). And in limited at bats so far, they’ve been decent against LHP (14th in wRC+). Heaney’s been plagued with struggles the third time through the order in his career (only 3 AB this season). To get to 6 IP, he’ll almost assuredly have to pitch a third time through. Even with a shitty OAK offense, there’s multiple ways for us to get there with this one.

Heaney has always been excellent at generating strikeouts, but his 11.4 K/9 right now is very misleading. His fastball is down 1.5 mph and his swinging strike rate is down to 9% (typically he’s in the 12-14% range). It’s going to be very tough for him to maintain his current K rate if that trend continues. A’s have 8 right handed hitters in the lineup today which will ding his K rate and home plate ump Jordan Baker tends to squeeze pitchers. Projecting this closer to -220. We are getting quite a bit of value here
