Over 8.5 strikeouts? In this economy? While usually I wouldn’t dabble with an over on a line this high, Shohei Ohtani has proved to the baseball world that the norms don’t apply to him.
While Ohtani is once again at the forefront of AL MVP conversations, he somewhat incredulously has thrusted himself into the thick of the Cy Young race. He’s pitching to a 2.80 ERA with a whopping 134 strikeouts in 93.1 innings. His strikeout rate of 35.9% is second to only Spencer Strider among all starting pitchers.
He’s eclipsed this line in nine of his last 16 starts, including his recent run of five straight outings with at least 10 punchouts. Over this stretch, Ohtani ranks second in swinging strike rate (17.9%) and first in called strike rate (20.5%).
The Rangers have seen Ohtani twice this season, striking out only 12 times in a combined 9.2 innings. However, those matchups were over two months ago, and both were in Texas.
The Rangers possess the ninth-highest strikeout rate versus righties in away games, and Ohtani does far better at home, with a 37.9% K rate. Plus, the Rangers' swinging strike rate is the highest in all of baseball.
Ohtani showed us last season just how good he can be at the plate en route to mashing 46 home runs. It feels as if he’s looking to wow us once again this season — this time with his run of strikeouts.
Tonight, I have the two-way dynamo projected to once again reach double-digit punch-outs.
Pick: Shohei Ohtani Over 8.5 Strikeouts (+104 · Play to -120)
