With the recent brilliance of Sandy Alcantara firmly in the limelight, it’s easy to overlook the season Pablo Lopez has put together.
The right-hander got off the scolding hot start with a 1.83 ERA through the end of May. And even after a few bumpy starts in June, Lopez is still sporting a 2.91 ERA on the season.
He’s been great at home, with a 2.41 ERA in 41 innings, and he’s eclipsed this line in four of his last six outings. Opposing hitters are hitting a measly .189 against Lopez in Miami, with an OPS of .606.
Looking at the Pirates' hitters over the last month versus right-handed pitching, they're hitting just .216 (fifth-lowest) but have a slugging and ISO in the top eight of the league (.425 and .209, respectively).
As Brian Windhorst might wonder, what does that mean? Well, the Pirates aren’t stringing together hits in bulk, but they're hitting home runs and extra-base hits at an above-average rate.
But Lopez has thrived at limiting opponents' damage, with a .385 slugging percentage allowed. And with pitching outs props, sporadic offensive production tends to have less of an impact on a pitcher who lasts longer in the game.
The Marlins' bullpen has been used for 15.2 innings over the last four days, and with a day game tomorrow, they’ll likely lean on Lopez to pitch deep into this game.
I have the fifth-year pro finishing six innings before he hits 100 pitches tonight.
Pick: Pablo Lopez Over 17.5 Pitching Outs (-130 · Play to -145)
