We have three guarantees in life: death, taxes, and the Tampa Bay Rays developing a quality pitching staff out of relative obscurity. This season is no different, with Jeffrey Springs at the forefront. The southpaw is pitching to a 2.52 ERA in 2022, with 95 strikeouts in 89.1 innings.
Springs has eclipsed this line in seven of his past 13 starts. His success with strikeouts is borne from his changeup, the pitch that’s racked up almost half of his K’s. His 37.7% whiff rate with the changeup has led Springs to rank in the 72nd percentile and 75th percentile in whiff and strikeout percentage, respectively.
The fifth-year pro is a threat to rack up the strikeouts on any given night, and the matchup against the Angels should play right into Springs hands. Anywhere between five and seven of the Angels likely starters tonight have at least a 25% whiff rate against changeups this season. And as a team, the Angels rank 22nd in wRC (-0.03) against the pitch since June 1.
Overall, it’s a nice spot for Springs against an Angels team that’s run a 24% strikeout rate (sixth-highest), and .643 OPS (third-lowest) against left-handed pitching this season. I have the Rays hurler hitting this in just five innings.
Pick: Jeffrey Springs Over 5.5 Strikeouts (-122). Playable up to -140.
