It’s been quite the run for the Yankees' starting pitching this season. Perhaps the unsung hero of the pitching staff has been Jordan Montgomery. The southpaw has put together a 3.02 ERA across 59.2 innings thus far.
The Yankees have been pretty strict about protecting Montgomery’s pitch count — he has yet to throw more than 90 pitches in a game. However, he’s third in the league with 3.5 pitches per plate appearance.
His efficiency, coupled with his second-lowest Hard-Hit Rate, have kept the big lefty extremely effective.
Montgomery has completed at least six innings in five of his last nine starts. And tonight, there’s reason to believe his leash might be a bit longer than normal.
Since his last start, the Yankees have had to deploy the bullpen for 22.1 innings over the last four games. Already down a few key relievers due to injury, the Yankees will be relying on Montgomery for length.
While the Cubs do hit lefties well, Montgomery has eclipsed this line in his last four home starts. Last season, we saw Aaron Boone let Montgomery throw upwards of 100 pitches in times of need, and tonight’s game is positioned to be one of those instances.
