It’s easy to fly under the radar when you’re part of a starting rotation with Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer; but Chris Bassitt has put together a reputable first season in Queens for the Mets. The veteran has pitched to a 3.26 ERA (3.20 xERA) across 23 starts.
He’s been terrific at home, posting a 2.55 ERA with 81 strikeouts across 77 2/3 innings. In his 12 starts at Citi Field, he’s punched out at least six hitters in nine outings.
While Bassitt doesn’t possess the overwhelming velocity of his former Cy Young winning teammates, the crafty righty relies more on his pitch mix. He throws five pitches at least 12% of the time, and has shown strikeout ability with each pitch. In fact, he has a whiff rate of at least 24% on four of those five pitches (slider, cutter, four-seam fastball and curveball).
Bassitt gets the Rockies tonight in what should be a favorable matchup. Since the beginning of June, Colorado ranks 10th in strikeout rate versus righties in away games (23.4%), and 27th in wRC+ (79). With their lineup having very limited experience versus Bassitt, and not having faced him this season, the advantage today should sit with the Mets hurler.
I have the right-hander striking out seven Rockies tonight.
