For the final time this season, we’re presented with a new matchup, as the Celtics and Warriors square off in Game 1 of the NBA Finals. As you’d expect from the two conference champions, these teams bring strengths on both sides of the floor, leaving us with some intriguing player prop angles.
The one edge I’m keying in on is with Jordan Poole. The Warriors guard has been a revelation this season, averaging a career-high 25.9 PRA. However, with the Warriors relatively healthy, coupled with a tough matchup, I’m looking to fade Poole in Game 1.
The third-year pro has seen his playing time dwindle over the last two series', as he’s failed to eclipse 30 minutes in the last seven games. While he’ll still be the focal point offensively of Golden State’s second unit, the potential return of Gary Payton II, as well as the continued strong play of Kevon Looney, are likely to impact Poole’s minutes.
Plus, Boston’s elite team defense should give Poole fits. The Michigan alum has done most of his scoring damage at the rim this postseason, scoring 58% of his baskets within 10 feet (compared to 43% in the regular season). The Celtics have been strong against driving guards throughout the playoffs (Kyrie Irving, Jrue Holiday, Kyle Lowry) so Poole should struggle to get the ball to the bucket.
Tonight, I have Poole projected at 18 PRA.
Pick: Jordan Poole Under 21.5 Points + Rebounds + Assists; play to 20.5. Also playable: Under 15.5 Points.
