Despite the Golden State Warriors' resounding victory in Game 2, it was a tough scene for Klay Thompson. The Splash Brother netted just 11 points on 4-of-19 shooting. Even with some stat-padding time in the fourth quarter of a blowout, Thompson could only muster four points on 1-of-5 shooting in the final frame.
It’s notable because Thompson was pulled for the final six minutes of the third quarter, which coincided with Golden State’s game-defining run. He is likely slated for his typical minutes in Game 3, but suddenly, his floor isn’t as stable as usual.
Playing time aside, the Celtics are clearly giving Thompson fits defensively. Only eight of his 19 3-point attempts have been open looks and, perhaps more importantly, Boston’s swarming defense is making Thompson put the ball on the floor. Seventeen of his 33 total shot attempts in the NBA Finals have come off at least one dribble, only making four of his tries.
In general, the Celtics' defense has allowed the lowest frequency of open 3-pointers over the course of the playoffs (29%). Individually, Jaylen Brown has defended Thompson well, allowing him to shoot 2-of-7 across 56 partial possessions in Games 1 and 2.
With the series shifting back to Boston, I expect the Celtics to assert themselves defensively from the jump. I have Thompson’s PRA projected at 21 tonight, making the under my favorite play of the game.
Pick: Under 25.5 PRA (-125) — Play under down to 24.5 or under 18.5 Points
