About 75% into the season, it’s more than safe to say the marriage between Westbrook and the Lakers is not exactly working out. The 14-year veteran’s average of 33.1 PRA is his lowest since his sophomore season, as he’s struggled to find his footing all year.
His decline is even more apparent of late. Since Jan. 1, Westbrook is averaging 28.3 PRA. Plus, he’s stayed under this line in seven of his last nine games played without Anthony Davis.
The Clippers have defended Westbrook well this season, yielding only 21, 27 and 22 PRA in their previous matchups. Terrance Mann and Robert Covington, who drew the defensive assignment last week, troubled Westbrook with their length. Overall, the Clippers’ defensive prowess (seventh in defensive rating) should help contain the Lakers point guard.
Additionally, I expect Dwight Howard to get some more run in this game to match with Clippers big man Ivica Zubac. Howard's presence would limit Westbrook’s rebounding potential.
I expect the tough sledding for Westbrook to continue tonight. I have him projected at 27 PRA.
