Middle Tennessee 2024 Season Preview

The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders enter the 2024 football season after a challenging 2023 campaign that finished with a 4-8 overall record and a 3-5 mark in conference play. It also concluded with the firing of 18-year head coach Rick Stockstill.

First-year head coach Derek Mason takes over the MTSU helm for 2024. He went 27-55 and made two bowl games as the Vanderbilt University head coach before serving as defensive coordinator for Auburn and Oklahoma State in recent seasons.

Mason has his work cut out for him in 2024. The Blue Raiders will have many fresh faces after a busy transfer portal and substantial personnel turnover. Still, a preseason media poll had Middle Tennessee picked to finish fourth in Conference USA, so informed viewers do see some potential in the team, even if it takes the squad some time to find its footing.

According to preseason odds, a winning season wasn't entirely out of reach for Middle Tennessee. The Blue Raiders' win total was set at 4.5 (-138 for the over and +112), which means the total is shaded slightly to 5.0. However, Middle Tennessee would need one more win than that in the regular season to finish 6-5.

As for winning C-USA, Middle Tennessee is going to have to pull off some major upsets. Entering the season, the team was +2500 (25-to-1 odds) to win the conference.

Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders Point Spreads

Middle Tennessee had a losing season in 2023, and so did the bettors who wagered on them via the point spread. Middle Tenn went 4-7 (36.3%) "against the spread" (ATS). The team failed to cover in four of the first five games of the season.

With spread bets, if a team covers, bets on that team pay off. Spread bets rely on the margin of victory to decide the bet, and they look like this:

  • Middle Tennessee +3 (-110)
  • New Mexico State -3 (-110)

With a 13-7 loss, underdog MTSU failed to win the game and also failed to cover the 3-point spread. The favored team — New Mexico State in this case — needed to win only by 3.5 points (or, essentially 4) to win the bet. Had the Aggies won the game by just 3 points, the spread bet would've pushed, and both sides of the bet would've been refunded.

Middle Tennessee Over/Unders

Another popular bet on college football is an over/under, or totals, bet. With this bet, rather than which team wins or loses or the amount of the victory, you’re wagering on how many points are scored by both teams in the game.

Last season, betting under 52.0 for the game against Florida International that finished with a 40-6 score was a winning bet. The total points scored (46) was less than the number oddsmakers set the total. For an "over" bet to hit, you’d need 52.5 points (53) or more combined points. Had the game finished at exactly 52 points, all bets would've been refunded.

Middle Tennessee hit on 54.5% of its Overs in their games last season, so bettors had a small profit for the year.

Middle Tennessee Moneylines

If wins and losses aren’t just the most important thing, but the only thing, then moneyline bets are for you. Moneyline bets are wagers on which team will win the game outright. However, markets adjust the odds based on whether the Blue Raiders are expected to win the game (making them the “favorites”) or expected to lose (“underdogs”).

Favored teams – those with minus odds – pay out less than the amount bet on them; underdogs (plus sign) pay out more. For example, the Blue Demons winning as -250 favorites vs. UTEP would require $250 to be wagered to win $100, but if they’re +250 underdogs, you need to risk just $100 to win $250.

Middle Tennessee Props

Proposition, or prop, bets are wagers on a player's stat line for a game. They're a great entry into betting if you're a fan of fantasy football or specific players on a team.

Other than rushing yards, you could bet on MTSU players to score a touchdown, their receiving yards, longest field goal made, and more.

Middle Tennessee Futures

Future bets are wagers on things that happen over the course of the season, including the total number of wins Middle Tennessee has or a player to win an award at the end of the year. You could even take a long-shot bet on the Blue Raiders to win the national title (5,000-to-1 odds).

Other Middle Tennessee futures for 2024 include their odds to win Conference USA (25-to-1), make the playoffs (3,000-to-1), and more.
