With the worst of the Western New York snowstorm in the rear view mirror, we’re presented with a clearer picture of how weather will affect the game between the Bills and Steelers. While the conditions will be far from ideal, the passing game for the Bills should be back in play today.
And that bodes well for Khalil Shakir, who has emerged as a reliable target for Josh Allen in recent weeks.
The slot receiver has cleared this combined line in eight of his last 11 games. And over the last three games (all must-win for the Bills), Shakir has pulled in all of his 13 targets.
Shakir’s role has evolved over the course of the season. Having been used as more of a down-field threat earlier this year (and last season), his average depth of target is only 7.4 yards over the last three games.
Quarterback Josh Allen’s arm strength should be more than enough to cut through the projected 10-15 mph winds to get the ball to his pass-catchers. The Bills will be without receiver Gabe Davis, so I expect Shakir’s snap count to remain above the 75% mark he's accrued over the last two weeks.
Bills leading receiver Stefon Diggs will have a tougher individual matchup against Steelers standout rookie cornerback Joey Porter Jr. And tight end Dalton Kincaid will be up against a Steelers defense that ranked sixth in DVOA against his position group (per FTN Fantasy). It’s a sneaky good spot for Shakir to see some added target volume.
I have the Boise State product projected with four catches for close to 40 yards today.
