The major question mark for the Bills' offense coming into this season was who would be on the receiving end of quarterback Josh Allen’s passes.
After the departure of receivers Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis, third-year slot receiver Khalil Shakir was left as the longest-tenured Bill in the wide receiver room.
So far this season, Shakir leads the Bills in both targets (eight) and receptions (eight). While the volume is meager for a two-game sample, Allen has only needed to throw the ball 42 times thus far.
In fact, the Bills have only had to run 51.5 offensive plays per game. Over the past three seasons, the Bills have averaged 66 offensive plays per game. Some flukey game scripts have kept the Bills' offense off the field, and I’m expecting a regression to the mean.
Tonight’s opponent — the Jaguars — have consistently allowed their opponents around 65 offensive plays per game in the Doug Pederson era, including that exact amount in each of the first two games this season.
Also, the Jaguars have really struggled with their pass defense this season. Through two games, Jacksonville’s secondary has permitted 30 catches by opposing wide receivers.
Shakir, who lines up in the slot for 77% of his routes run (per Pro Football Focus), will have an advantageous individual matchup against third-round rookie Jarrian Jones.
Overall, I’m expecting Allen to have to throw the ball more than he has, and Shakir should continue in a prominent role.
I have the emerging receiver projected to see seven targets tonight.
