The Miami Marlins face off against the New York Mets as rookie Valente Bellozo takes the hill for Miami. He's been very good, his first five starts producing a 2.28 ERA with a WHIP of 0.94. His 21% strikeout rate is solid, his 52% ground ball rate very impressive for a rookie; though his 6.5% walk rate could be a point of concern. On the downside, the 3.20 FIP does show that his ERA may jump up a bit, but it is still solid right now, considering who he is playing against. Bellozo has been fantastic of late, giving up just 2 ER in his last three starts over 17.2 innings.
On the other side, Paul Blackburn takes the mound for the Mets. Blackburn has made 12 starts this season with what is roughly a 4.43 ERA, a 1.22 WHIP, a substantially lower strikeout rate of around 19.5%, and a 47% ground ball rate. He has a pretty manageable 7% walk rate, though he has had a tough time keeping the ball in the yard, allowing 1.34 home runs per 9 innings. Meanwhile, the recent form of Blackburn is a bit troublesome: over his last five starts, he has given up 21 runs in 25 innings, walking 10 batters in that stretch. That mixed form, now aligned with an improving Miami offense, could be trouble for New York.
As well, the bullpen of the Mets remains unsettled in their last 10 games where they have projected a 4.50 ERA, while the Marlins have been hitting .254 in the past five games. With Bellozo's form and the Mets' struggles lately, taking Miami on the +1.5 run line is just too hard to pass up. The Marlins have been shown to be able to hit weaker pitching this year, and with Bellozo on the mound, they have a solid chance of keeping this game close, even an outside chance of actually winning it.
