David Festa has been quite the Twins Twirler of late and has been pretty efficient over his last three starts, boasting a WHIP of just 0.95; he has given up a total of only 7 earned runs in his last 14.2 innings, punching out 18 in the process, which puts him in good shape to carry on keeping the bats quiet. On the other side of the coin, Jeffrey Springs has been even spectacular. His last outing produced 9 strikeouts and no earned runs in 5 innings alone, showing he can shut down opposing lineups. The ERA on the whole season stands at 3.67 for Springs, but given up over the previous 13.1 innings is a sensational total of 4 earned runs at an ERA of 2.70. Having already faced Minnesota and pitching 5.1 scoreless innings, that would go to prove that success can be replicated.
The bullpens further support a case that can be made for the under. The Twins bullpen has been steady all season, with a 3.32 ERA and a WHIP of 1.11, and they've continued that form with a 3.62 ERA over their last 27.1 innings. The bullpen has been one of the best in the league all season long, with a 2.92 ERA along with a 1.10 WHIP. They've gotten a little tired lately, posting a 4.29 ERA over their last 35.2 innings, but they're still capable of shutting down a struggling Minnesota offense.
Offensively, both teams have struggled a lot with each other. The Rays, by contrast, rank near dead last in both departments - 3.88 runs per game with a batting average of .231. The Twins did not fare any better as they scored 5 or fewer runs in 8 of their last 10 games. Their team batting average is closer to the middle at .252, but inconsistency has bitten them, more so against quality pitching. With two strong starters taking the hill, and shaky offenses, this game is set up to go under the total of 7.5 runs.
