How Ball State Reached the Camellia Bowl
Mike Neu’s Ball State team was a shell of the 2020 program that clocked out 7-1 and inside the AP Top 25.
The Cardinals were outscored by 3.2 points per game this fall, after registering a notable +8.5 clip during last year’s run to a MAC title.
Ball State was romped by 31 by Penn State in Week 2, then 33 to Wyoming the following game.
It suffered another pair of double-digit losses in conference play to Toledo and Central Michigan, settling for a fourth-place finish in the West.
The program also suffered a couple of separate, four-game losing skids against the spread in 2021.
Ball State’s offense went under the team total in nine of 12 games, averaging a paltry 24.4 points per contest.
How Georgia State Reached the Camellia Bowl
Anyone who counted Georgia State out following its 0-2 start missed out on a treasure trove.
The Panthers somehow righted the ship after getting outscored 102-27 in their first two contests, finishing the season 8-4 against the spread with six covers over the final seven games.
The biggest was an outright win over Coastal Carolina as 13-point underdogs. That kick-started a three-game winning streak to close it out for head coach Shawn Elliott, who’s been bowl-eligible in four of the last five years.
The defense wasn’t great in any one area, but it did hold five of the last six opponents under the team total.
Offensively, Georgia State posted the highest rush rate (63.5%) among Group of 5 affiliates when factoring out the service academies.
The Panthers racked up 225.4 yards per game on the ground, a top-10 rank nationally.
