The Cincinnati Bearcats will head to Oxford, Ohio, to square off against the Miami (OH) RedHawks at Yager Stadium.

The Bearcats enter this one following a close home loss at the hands of the Pittsburgh Panthers. This puts Cincinnati at 1-1 following their week 1 win over the Towson Tigers.

Miami (OH), on the other hand, will be hunting for their first win of the year after a tough road loss at Northwestern’s makeshift stadium near the beach in Evanston.

These two teams squared off a year ago when Miami (OH) pulled off the upset in Cincinnati, and the Bearcats will be looking for revenge.

Can the RedHawks pull off another upset?

Cincinnati Football vs Miami (OH) Football Preview

Cincinnati Bearcats Betting Preview: Ground-And-Pound Mentality

The Bearcats are led by head coach Scott Satterfield, who took over the program following Luke Fickell’s departure to Wisconsin a few years ago. Satterfield did not have a promising year last year, finishing 3-9, so he will look to clean that up this season following a 1-1 start.

The team has replaced Emory Jones at quarterback, who left for the NFL, with newcomer Brendan Sorsby. Sorsby transfers in from Indiana after they brought in new coach Curt Cignetti. Sorsby has started well this season and must keep it rolling against a tough Miami (OH) team.

Satterfield runs a typical blue-collar midwestern offense. He approaches the game with a ground-and-pound mentality, rushing at the 26th-highest rate nationally. The Bearcats want to run the ball and are pretty good at it. Behind lead back Corey Kiner, they ranked in the top 40 nationally in Rush Success Rate and Explosiveness last season.

Cincinnati is not as good at passing the ball, ranking 68th in Pass Success Rate a year ago. However, the Bearcats could improve with Sorsby under center.

Cincinnati’s defense has been the weaker side of the ball this season. The Bearcats allow 24 points per game and rank 97th nationally in Success Rate Allowed.

Miami RedHawks Betting Preview: Play Defense And Run The Ball

Head Coach Chuck Martin enters his 11th season in Oxford after a very successful 2023 season, in which the team finished 11-3.

After losing two weeks ago on the road, I expect him to have this team focused in this rivalry matchup and the first home game of the year.

He returns his starting quarterback from a year ago, so he should be able to keep the playbook open offensively with a seasoned quarterback returning.

Brett Gabbert leads the offense. Gabbert led the Redhawks to a hot start last year before suffering a season-ending leg injury. Gabbert looked excellent last year but shaky in his first game back against a decent Northwestern defense. The Bearcat defense should be a more straightforward test, albeit not that much easier.

Miami (OH) is a run-first team, and it will need to rely on its ground game for the first few weeks of the year to help Gabbert regain confidence and comfort with his repaired leg. The RedHawks rank 12th nationally in rush rate.

The Redhawks should be able to score some points against Cincinnati's defense. Still, the key for them will be Gabbert's ability to limit turnovers and make some of the throws we saw him make a year ago.

Miami (OH) has always been stronger on defense. The RedHawks are pretty balanced at defending both the run and the pass and are solid at causing Havoc and preventing Explosives. The linebacking corps is great, and they've always been solid in the red zone. Everyone showed up in Week 1, and I suspect they'll limit Cincinnati's offensive production in Week 3.

How to Make College Football Picks For My Cincinnati vs Miami (OH) Prediction

This game will be a classic offense vs defense game, with Cincinnati having the better offense and Miami (OH) having the better defense.

Defense wins championships, and I am not sure this Cincinnati offense is good enough to overcome the stifling Redhawk defense.

Gabbert should look better this week after two extra weeks of practice coming off a Week 2 bye. The extra week to prepare for the RedHawks in their home opener should help them keep this one close and potentially win outright.

I will be taking the RedHawks and the points in their home opener.
