Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Betting Preview: Exceeding Expectations

Coastal Carolina has exceeded expectations this season after two wins to start the year.

The season-opening win on the road at Jacksonville State saw Coastal rack up 552 yards of offense with tons of explosive plays.

The offense was at it again against William & Mary. The Chants scored five times in the first half and completely controlled the game.

The run game has been clicking, with Christian Washington and Darren Lloyd leading. Dual-threat quarterback Ethan Vasko has done enough with his arm and legs to create problems for opposing defenses.

What has equally been impressive for the Chanticleers this season has been their defense.

They frustrated and completely shut down Jacksonville State through three quarters. William and Mary also struggled to solve this defense, punting on seven of its first eight offensive possessions.

While many thought the drop-off this year at Coastal Carolina would be significant, it hasn’t been up to this point.

Temple Owls Betting Preview: They're Bad, Folks

Temple was projected to be bad this year, and the Owls are bad.

A season-opening loss against Oklahoma was no surprise, as the Owls were completely outmatched. Still, the fact that they were completely shut down by a Navy defense who struggled to stop Bucknell was telling.

Through two games, the offensive line is the leading issue in a run game that has produced 56 carries for 104 yards. The longest rush by an Owl has been 12 yards. Temple has also allowed seven sacks and 16 tackles for loss this year.

The Owls do not have the quarterback play necessary to extend drives and finish them with scores. Their only touchdown of the season came when the Navy game was well-decided, and they snuck one past the Navy defense on 4th and 14. They're also 7-for-27 on third down.

Defensively, you saw Temple wear down in the second and third quarters as they were out of position and missed several tackles. The Owl defense has allowed over 500 rushing yards in two games and has been out there for many snaps against two physical football teams.

Coastal Carolina vs Temple Picks & Prediction

This will be another brutal game for Temple.

They allow too much Havoc, and the negative plays consistently stall offensive drives. The Owls have turned the ball over nine times through the first two weeks of play.

Coastal Carolina creates negative plays — the Chants have forced seven sacks and four turnovers through two games.

On defense, the Owls are not in a position to create Havoc and haven't forced a turnover this season. I expect Coastal Carolina to run the ball effectively against a tired, overmatched Temple defense.

Temple cannot run the ball or sustain drives due to the negative plays given up, which Coastal Carolina will feast on in this matchup.

The Chanticleers have allowed some garbage time yards and scores in both of their first two games this season. That is a point of focus that the coaching staff will work to clean up as they continue to work with rotational players.

I fully expect the Coastal Carolina defensive effort to remain high even if the game is a blowout in the fourth quarter.

This line is on the move after opening at -14.5. My position is on Coastal Carolina to cover the current number of -18, and I support a play on Coastal Carolina that goes up to -20.5.

Pick: Coastal Carolina -17 (-110, bet365) | Bet to -20.5 (-110)
