Oddsmakers have posted opening point spreads for the 2019 college football national championship game, making Alabama a 9-point favorite over Clemson. It dropped to -8, then -7, then to -6.5 within an hour. At William Hill, Alabama opened -5.5.
Westgate opened the over/under at 57.5 and moved to 59.5. Most offshore books opened at 61.
The line opened early in the second quarter of Alabama's game against Oklahoma, when the Tide were up three scores.
The Tide and Tigers have played in the last three College Football Playoffs, including in consecutive national title games. Alabama leads the series 2-1 after winning 24-6 last season in the semifinals.
The Tide have been favored in 54 straight games including this one against Clemson — they were last an underdog to Georgia in 2015.
Clemson was last an underdog against a team not named Alabama in the 2016-17 College Football Playoff, when it was a 1-point dog to Ohio State and won 31-0. The Tigers were also a 1-point dog at home to Louisville earlier that season.
