Florida A&M vs Miami Preview

Florida A&M Betting Preview: Can Rattlers Keep Pace?

The last time these teams met, Miami emerged with a 70-3 victory. Florida A&M may sound like a total cupcake off name recognition alone, and while there is definitely a talent deficit here compared to Miami's loaded roster, this has been a successful program in its own right.

In fact, the Rattlers are the reigning HBCU national champions. This is a program that has won 13 straight games and finished last season undefeated.

This season, things haven't been as easy.

Florida A&M ranks 24th in the FCS Poll and needed 15 points in the fourth quarter to come from behind and beat South Carolina State at home last week by just four points. The week before, Florida A&M survived against Norfolk State by a score of 24-23.

There is at least a small ray of light here, as FAMU brought in 28 transfers from the FBS level over the offseason, and 12 of those came from Power 4 programs.

One of the key incoming transfers is starting quarterback Daniel Richardson, who played three years at Central Michigan and one year at Florida Atlantic before coming to FAMU.

Richardson has completed 45-of-68 pass attempts on the season for 568 yards and six touchdowns with zero interceptions.

FAMU relies heavily on its passing attack as its leading rusher has just 14 carries for 72 yards through two weeks.

Miami Hurricanes Betting Preview: Is a Letdown Coming?

As far as "letdown spots" go, this game qualifies.

Miami was arguably the most impressive team in the entire sport in Week 1. The Hurricanes stormed into The Swamp and emerged with a dominant 41-17 victory over the Gators. Not only did they win, they did it in style.

Miami doubled up Florida in total yards, gaining 385 through the air and 144 on the ground. The Hurricanes shut down the Gators' woeful passing attack and held Graham Mertz to 91 yards passing.

And outside of a breakaway run from Florida's Montrell Johnson Jr., the Hurricanes were able to contain Florida on the ground as well. There won't be any weak spots for Florida A&M's offense to exploit.

But the biggest problem for the Rattlers is Miami quarterback Cam Ward, who is rocketing up Heisman odds list. Ward was brilliant in his first start for the Hurricanes, finishing with three touchdown passes and completing 26-of-35 pass attempts.

Xavier Restrepo was his go-to guy, but three different Hurricanes tallied four or more receptions. Ward spread the love and there's no shortage of talent on Miami's offense.

This is a team that feels more complete than previous versions. There's not much look-ahead potential here as Miami has Ball State in Week 3. An emotion letdown coming off the Florida blowout is truly the only cause for concern.

Florida A&M vs Miami Pick & Prediction

After what Miami did to Mertz last week in the Swamp, it's really difficult to imagine the FAMU passing attack having any legs to stand on here.

The run game will be shut down immediately, and this will be yet another opportunity for Ward to grab the national spotlight with more eye-popping numbers. Back the Hurricanes to cover.

Pick: Miami ATS
