The Georgia Southern Eagles visit Oxford, Mississippi, to take on Lane Kiffin and the Ole Miss Rebels in a southern matchup in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

The Eagles enter this one following a blowout win against South Carolina State and are currently 2-1.

The Rebels enter this one after dismantling Wake Forest in Winston-Salem and getting their matchup with Wake Forest canceled for next season. Just another team that Ole Miss has made light work of this season.

Can the Rebels keep the blowouts rolling against Georgia Southern, or can the Eagles keep it a little closer than some of the previous teams that squared up with the Rebels?

Georgia Southern Eagles Betting Preview: Very Little Room For Error on Offense

Coming up to Oxford from Statesboro, Georgia, coach Clay Helton leads the Eagles for his third season after coming over from USC. Georgia Southern has hopes to make another bowl game and improve from last year’s 6-7 record.

This will be a tough matchup for Helton against an Ole Miss team that has looked good up to this point.

The Eagles have turned to sophomore JC French this season to generate most of the offensive production for Helton’s offense. Helton brings in a pass-happy attack from his days at USC, suitable for 19th in pass rate. This is pretty evident, given that French has attempted 110 throws while the team has 87 carries. The Eagles have been airing it out and finding a lot of success in the big plays, ranking 13th in the nation in Explosiveness. Georgia Southern can light up the scoreboard no matter who they are playing.

The Eagles return running back Jalen White for his third season, and he adds some stability in the ground game and pass protection, which will be critical when facing off against one of the SEC’s best teams thus far. The Eagles will need French to continue playing mistake-free football to try and give them a chance in this one.

Because of this fast-paced and high-scoring offense, the Eagles' defense finds itself on the field quite often. This shows in their defensive effectiveness, where they rank 116th in Success Rate allowed, 116th in Explosiveness allowed, and 100th in Havoc. The defense struggles to get stops, often allows plenty of big plays, and rarely forces turnovers.

This is a disaster recipe when playing efficient offenses, which Ole Miss has proven to be. The only thing the Eagles can hope for in this one is taking advantage of any potential mistakes from Ole Miss and responding with points.

Ole Miss Rebels Betting Preview: Can the Defense Continue To Prove Themselves?

Lane Kiffin and company have the Rebels and their fans hopeful for a playoff appearance and have come out of the gates hot.

The Rebels have won their games by an average of 53 points per game this season, putting up points and playing good defense. They are 3-0 and will play this as their last tune-up game before beginning the gauntlet SEC schedule.

Jaxson Dart again leads the Rebels' high-octane offense in year three as the starting quarterback in Oxford. Dart will face off against his former coach from USC in this one before he transferred to Ole Miss three seasons ago when Helton took the Georgia Southern job after being let go by USC. Dart has improved much since those days at USC, and he has led this Ole Miss offense to the third-best in the nation in terms of success rate.

Despite losing star running back Quinshon Judkins in the transfer portal, the Ole Miss run game has not skipped a beat, with Henry Parrish Jr. running for over 300 yards through three games this year. Ole Miss has often shown they can score with the best of them, and this game should be no different as they fine-tune this offense before facing off against some of the nation’s top defenses in the SEC.

Over the past few seasons, the story has revolved around Lane Kiffin’s defense and whether he can ever coach up an elite stop unit. The Rebels have been getting better and better the last few years, and so far, this looks to be the best defense Lane Kiffin has had in his time in Oxford. The Rebels rank sixth in Success Rate allowed and have generally limited chunk plays, ranking 49th in Explosiveness allowed.

The Rebels also generate turnovers well giving them a +3 margin on the year. This defense will be put to a big test against an air raid offense that the Eagles will bring in this one, so we will see if they can contain that attack.

Georgia Southern vs Ole Miss Pick & Prediction

Both of these offenses have been high-scoring and efficient this season, and they will both have their chances in this one to continue to score points.

The Rebels have faced one other pass-happy team this year, Middle Tennessee State, and defeated the Blue Raiders 52-3.

Despite that lopsided result, I believe Georgia Southern will convert on some opportunities to score, as Ole Miss will try to keep the defensive playbook close to the chest before the conference play begins next week.

Give me the over on Saturday in Oxford.
