As you may be aware, the number 3 is a pretty important one in football betting. Given the frequency of field-goal margins in final scores, whether you're on one side or the other of a three-point spread often makes a world of difference.

That also means it's a pretty big deal when a spread that wasn't previously at the key number falls to it. Like what's happened here.

Arkansas State opened as a 5-point favorite at most books, with the really early openers coming all the way up at -6.5. And while this game has come close to splitting the betting population — 53% have taken Georgia State as of noon ET — this line fell down to 3.5 points entering game day.

And now it's made another, far more significant, move to to -3 — at least across a good portion of the market.

So why the drop?

According to our public betting percentages, the 53% of bettors on Georgia State have generated a much higher percentage of actual money — 83% as of writing. That means the Panthers are attracting much bigger bets.

And while big bets can technically come from anyone, they're far more likely to come from those who do this professionally — aka sharps — than your recreational football fans.

Because of that, tonight's discrepancy, paired with the line move, can be used as a hint toward the sharp side of this spread.
