For just about the entirety of the 2018 college football season, the Heisman race has been painfully boring.
Since September, Alabama's Tua Tagovailoa has been an odds-on favorite, reaching as high as -1000 at a few sportsbooks over the past month. Many books even stopped bothering to list Heisman odds — it was that much of a foregone conclusion in the eyes of some oddsmakers.
But with conference championship weekend having come and gone, that all has changed.
Not were new Heisman odds posted for the first time in over a week, a new name is at the top of the list.
- Kyler Murray: -145
- Tua Tagovailoa: +125
- Dwayne Haskins: +1600
- Will Grier: +2500
In Oklahoma's 39-27 win over Texas on Saturday, Murray threw for three touchdowns on 379 yards passing, and added 39 yards on the ground. In doing so, he not only led the Sooners to a fourth straight Big 12 championship, but became the favorite to win this year's Heisman.
Of course, you don't go from +350 to -145 in one weekend without a bit of help, and Tagovailoa certainly provided that.
Before leaving Saturday's SEC Championship Game with an ankle injury, Tua threw for just 164 yards on 10 of 25 passing. He also added two picks — a career high — and had only one touchdown.
The Tide were still down by a touchdown when he was forced out the game in the fourth quarter.
It's worth noting that some Heisman votes had already been cast prior to the conference championship, which would only help Tua, one would think.
