Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale, known for his large World Series and Super Bowl bets as a way to hedge against promotions for his business, has turned to college football for his latest million-dollar pick.
The Houston-based businessman who owns multiple furniture stores in Texas placed a $1.2 million bet on Alabama to beat Georgia in the College Football Playoff National Championship game on Monday. The moneyline bet is at +125 odds and was made at Caesars Sportsbook in Colorado. He flew to Colorado on Wednesday to place the bet.
Should Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide win as slight underdogs, Mack stands to collect $1.5 million.
On Friday, he added even more, placing a $449,500 bet at theScore Bet on Alabama's moneyline to win $584,350 at +130 odds.
He didn't stop there, adding multiple bets across other sportsbooks for more than $6 million on Alabama.
As usual, the bet is a hedge for a mattress promotion. If Alabama beats Georgia, anyone who buys $3,000 worth of product will get it for free.
"We saw Alabama beat Georgia already so I thought the customers would perceive this as a high value promotion, Mack told The Action Network's Darren Rovell.
Business has been especially strong during COVID times, Mack noted, "as anything for the house has gone through the roof. Our stuff is made in America so we haven't had the inventory problems that the guys who have their stuff made in China have had."
This will be the second meeting of the season between the SEC powers. Georgia looked like the best team in college football all season but dropped the SEC championship game to Alabama, 41-24. Down 10-0 early in the second quarter, the Tide responded to take a 24-17 halftime lead and never looked back.
Georgia was a 6-point favorite that day. The Bulldogs are 3-point favorites at most sportsbooks as of Wednesday night (real-time odds here).
Mattress Mack has made multiple million-dollar bets in the past. He notably lost $13 million when his hometown Houston Astros lost to the Washington Nationals in the 2019 World Series. He placed a $1 million bet on the Houston Cougars to win the national title in college basketball in the spring.
Mack also bet over $3 million on the Astros this year to win the World Series. The Astros ended up losing to the Atlanta Braves in the end.
All were made against promotions for his business.
Mack isn't the only one putting big money down on Alabama, although he's certainly placed the biggest yet. One Caesars bettor in Louisiana put $300,000 on Alabama, the sportsbook said.
