One week after one of the biggest wins in college football, Notre Dame lost to Northern Illinois as a 28-point favorite.

Notre Dame struggled throughout the game and found themselves down 13-6 at halftime to Northern Illinois.

The Irish battled back to get a 14-13 lead and then hung on for dear life in the fourth quarter.

Northern Illinois kicked a field goal to lead 16-14 with 36 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Notre Dame attempted a 60-yard field goal at the end of the game that never had a chance.

It is the worst loss by spread for Notre Dame since it lost its season opener as 28-point favorites vs. Northwestern in 1995.

This is Notre Dame's third loss straight-up as a 20+ point favorite within the first two weeks of the regular season since 1990. That is the most of any school in the nation according to Action Network Director of Research Evan Abrams.

Notre Dame entered the game ranked No. 5 in the country after beating Texas A&M as 3-point underdogs at College Station.

Many people were talking about the Notre Dame win as a massive boost for the College Football Playoff and a possible National Championship contender.

After losing to Northern Illinois, they will have an uphill climb to make the College Football Playoff.
