UAB Blazers 2024 Season Preview

After cranking out six straight winning seasons, UAB's first season in the American Athletic Conference did not go well. The Blazers finished 4-8 and failed to reach a bowl game for the first time since 2014 — the same year the program imploded before making its return in 2017.

In Year 2 of the Trent Dilfer era, UAB enters the season with the fourth-longest odds to win the conference at +3000.

UAB sits at 96th in Action Network's betting power ratings, putting it behind the majority of teams in the AAC. The Blazers' power rating is 9.5 points lower than AAC favorite Memphis, which means we'd project them as 9.5-point underdogs against the Tigers on a neutral field.

Here’s how you can bet on UAB this season and some key things to know.

Betting on UAB

There are plenty of ways to bet UAB football this season, including futures — like college football win totals and AAC Championship odds. Then, there are game-by-game markets, like moneylines, spreads and totals (also known as the over/under).

Betting UAB's Moneyline

How does a moneyline work? Here’s how it might look at a sportsbook like DraftKings or FanDuel:

• UAB -250
• South Florida +200 

The "-" sign means a team is favored, while the "+" sign means a team is the underdog distinguish the favorite. In this scenario, UAB would be the favorite.

Odds can be understood more clearly if you think in terms of betting $10 or $100. A wager on the Blazers' side means every $250 bet nets $100 in profit (plus the $250 stake back). The underdog is different, however. A $100 wager on the South Florida moneyline would profit $200 (plus the $100 stake back).

Betting UAB's Spread

Betting the spread is similar to a team's moneyline. The exception, though, is that the spread is the great equalizer when it comes to sports betting. Even elite teams — the Alabamas and Oregons of the world — are expected to go around .500 against the spread because the spread is based on each team's ability, injuries and recent form.

• UAB -3.5 (-110)
• Rice +3.5 ( -110)

If you bet UAB -3.5, that means the Blazers would have to win by four points or more. On the other side, if you bet Rice +3.5, you would need the Owls to lose by three points or fewer or win the game outright.

Betting UAB's Totals

The third big way to bet UAB in a single game would be the total — also known as the over/under. The total is simply how many points both teams combine for in a game.

• Over: 45.5 (-115)
• Under: 45.5 (-105)

A bet on the over would need the final score of both teams to add up to 46 points or more. However, a bet on the under would need the final score to add up to 44 points or less.

There’s a difference in payout with the over and under in this game as well. In this game, you must wager $1.15 for every $1 you want to win if you bet the over and $1.05 for every $1 you want to win if you bet the under.

UAB Player Props & More

College football player props are only available in some states, and that list continues to get smaller as more college betting scandals take place.

If college player props are available in your state, you may find markets like yardage totals or touchdown props. However, U.S. sportsbooks will offer far fewer markets for college players than they will for the NFL for a variety of reasons. The markets for player props also tend to be more limited for smaller games, like your typical Group of Five matchups.
