How Oklahoma State Reached the Fiesta Bowl

Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy truly one-upped himself this season.

The longtime head coach had been the model of consistency in Stillwater, winning at least seven games with a bowl bid in 15 years straight. He shattered the ceiling in 2021, though, with an 11-1 record, a win in the Bedlam Series and a Big 12 Coach of the Year Award bid to boot.

The defense was spectacular, allowing just 16.5 points per game during the regular season. Only Georgia, Clemson and Wisconsin were better.

The Cowboys’ 9-2-1 (81.8%) clip against the spread was the second best in the nation, behind Michigan.

Gundy, who’s registered four bowl wins in his last five tries, is aiming for his first top-10 rank inside both the AP and Coaches Polls since 2011.

How Notre Dame Reached the Fiesta Bowl

The Fighting Irish enter the postseason without head coach Brian Kelly, who accepted the vacant position at LSU.

Kelly, who led the team to College Football Playoff bids in the 2018 and ‘20, and his squad suffered a narrow loss to top-flight Cincinnati in early October. Otherwise, the Fighting Irish were perfect, especially down the stretch, outscoring opponents 162-23 in their final four games.

Notre Dame outscored opponents by an average of 17 points per game in 2021, which is 3.2 more than last season’s run to the CFP.

Former Wisconsin quarterback and transfer Jack Coan played well this season after taking over from Ian Book, posting more than 2,600 yards with 20 touchdowns against five interceptions. Running back Kyren Williams is five yards away from posting his second-consecutive 1,000-yard season.
