The Action Network Projected Wins: 5.2

Bet To Watch

Southern Miss win total Under 6.5 (-150)

Southern Miss will be starting from scratch in 2018, taking major losses on each side of the ball. The Golden Eagles rank 129th overall in returning production, second-lowest in the country. Of those losses, quarterback Keon Howard has left the program, leaving Kwadra Griggs to compete with JUCO transfer Jack Abraham. Two other freshman will compete in fall camp, making this truly a carousel at the quarterback position.

The defense takes losses everywhere aside from linebacker, but there was no bigger departure than defensive coordinator Tony Pecoraro, who left for Florida Atlantic. Pecoraro was one of the top coaches in the nation at causing havoc, and no matter the personnel, there should be decline.

Southern Miss does benefit from conference scheduling by playing cupcakes UTEP and Charlotte on the road, but Rice and Marshall come to Hattiesburg off a bye week. Road trips to UAB and North Texas should eliminate the Golden Eagles from Conference USA West division contention. Roll with the under 6.5 wins, as an upset against Marshall and Louisiana Tech that would be needed to hit seven wins are unlikely.

What else you need to know about Southern Miss

Southern Miss is 2-12 straight up at home as an underdog. Look to fade Southern Miss in short home dog situations like against Marshall and Louisiana Tech.

The Golden Eagles should flip the script in returning production come 2019 and be much better prepared.
