How UTSA Reached the Frisco Bowl
All the UTSA hype was warranted.
The Roadrunners are your Conference USA regular-season champions, upsetting Western Kentucky in a thrilling title game.
Second-year head coach Jeff Traylor is 19-6 overall and 16-9 against the spread at the post. His 64% cover rate is the sixth-best mark since 2020 for programs with at least 20 games.
UTSA’s 37.8 points per game’s good for top-15 nationally. The unit scored 44 or more five times in conference play, including 49 in the championship tilt.
The Roadrunners have gone over the total in five of the last six entering the postseason.
Traylor led the team to its second-ever bowl appearance last season, when they fell to Louisiana-Lafayette, 31-24.
How San Diego State Reached the Frisco Bowl
We’re all victims of recency bias from time to time, so it’s hard to not let what happened to San Diego State in the Mountain West Championship Game taint an otherwise successful season.
The Aztecs finished 11-2 in 2021 but stumbled to Utah State, 46-13, in the aforementioned Mountain West title game.
What’s even more surprising though is how bad San Diego State performed for college football bettors despite dropping just two games on the year.
The Aztecs covered just five spreads this season and really struggled down the stretch with just a 1-4-1 against-the-spread (ATS) record in their final six games.
Interestingly, San Diego State performed very well as an underdog (4-1 ATS), but really struggled when closing as the betting favorite (1-5-1 ATS).
