This is a sentence most people never thought they would read in their life.

Vanderbilt has upset Alabama in football 40-35. It is Vanderbilt's first win ever against the AP No. 1 team.

Vanderbilt was a 22.5-point underdog heading into the game. If that wasn't enough, the Commodores were +1000 on the moneyline.

According to our Action Network database, 97% of bets and 98% of money on moneyline were on Alabama and 72% of bets and 62% of money on spread were on Alabama.

According to BetLabs, the last time Bama lost outright as a 20-point favorite was Nov. 17, 2007 against UL Monroe. The Tide were 72-1 straight-up in that spot since 2005.

Sportsbooks were thrilled that Vanderbilt pulled off an upset against the top team in the nation. Traders at Twinspires, BetMGM and Prime Sportsbook told Vegas Insider's Patrick Everson that the result was massive for them, especially because Bama was a staple in parlays today.

Vanderbilt, a 3-touchdown-plus underdog, shocks Alabama 40-35.

Said @primesportsbook’s @joebrennanjr:

“Vandy winning outright was a big result for us. We really needed them to cover +21.5, but with the win, they took out a lot of parlays, too.

“Way to go, Commodores. Not just…

How big was Vanderbilt’s shocking 40-35 upset of Alabama?

“A monumental result for us, especially regarding parlays. Easily the best outcome we’ve seen thus far in the NCAAF season.”

Vandy jumped out to a 23-7 lead over the No. 1 team in the nation. That wasn't completely out of the ordinary throughout Alabama's dynasty. They have pulled off comebacks before. There were likely plenty of people that bet on Alabama live.

The issue is the Commodores never looked back. Vanderbilt's Diego Pavia had 36-yard touchdown pass to Junior Sherrill to give Vanderbilt a 30-21 lead late in the third quarter.

Alabama immediately answered when Jalen Milroe threw the ball up to superstar freshman Ryan Williams.

It became real for Vanderbilt fans when Miles Capers strip-sacked Milroe. Vanderbilt went right down the field to give the Commodores a 40-28 lead.

Alabama had faced Vanderbilt three times before since 2010 — 40.5-, 20- and 29.5-point spreads. All three were covers by the Tide as they won by a combined score of 148-3. As a favorite of 14 points or more on the road, Alabama was 47-1 SU and 29-18-1 ATS since 1990 entering Saturday's massive upset.
