How Wisconsin Reached the Las Vegas Bowl
Wisconsin had a fairly typical Wisconsin season. The Badgers had a painful offense, elite defense and chance to win the Big Ten West on the last day of the regular season.
But unlike in many years past over the last decade, the Badgers couldn’t finish. They lost to Minnesota as a touchdown favorite, allowing Iowa to win the West.
Wisconsin’s losses are nothing to scoff at, minus that puzzling one against the Gophers. The Badgers lost to Penn State in a nailbiter and were blown out by Michigan and Notre Dame. They finished the regular season with 4.10 yards per play allowed on defense, the second-best mark in the country behind Georgia.
But the offense couldn’t figure it out. Quarterback Graham Mertz didn’t take the next step, and Wisconsin finished 97th in yards per pass attempt.
Young running back Braelon Allen did break out, though, running for more than 100 yards in seven of the Badgers’ last eight regular-season games.
How Arizona State Reached the Las Vegas Bowl
It was an up-and-down year for the Sun Devils with a little more controversy than Herm Edwards would’ve liked.
ASU had one impressive win on the season, beating UCLA in the Rose Bowl 42-23. Other than that, they beat the teams the Sun Devils should’ve beaten and lost to the teams that were better than them.
Arizona State is led by quarterback Jayden Daniels, who had high expectations on his shoulders for 2021 and couldn’t quite live up to that standard. He finished with 2,221 yards, 10 touchdowns and nine interceptions through the air. His stats have progressively gotten worse since his freshman year, when he lit it up with 17 touchdowns and two interceptions back in 2019.
Daniels will have a big decision ahead of him about whether to take his talents to the next level, so keep an eye out on whether he plays in the bowl game or not.
Nothing the Arizona State does will jump off the page, although it did lead the Pac-12 in interceptions on defense and defensive touchdowns.
Despite going 8-4, they finished with a 5-7 record against the spread.
