The Central Division's third-place St. Louis Blues travel to Philadelphia tonight to take on the Metropolitan Division's seventh-place Flyers. Tonight will be the first meeting between these two teams this season.
Can the Flyers end their five-game losing streak, or will the Blues take care of business as a large road favorite?
Husso Continues Dream Season
The St. Louis Blues enter this contest in good form, as they are coming off of a big 6-3 road win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. St. Louis has now won three of their last four games and four of their last six road games.
Ville Husso is projected to get the start on Tuesday for the Blues, and he has been incredible this season. Husso comes into the contest with a 0.936 SV% and currently ranks second amongst starting goaltenders in 5-on-5 goals saved above expected per 60 minutes (GSAx).
The Blues' netminder has been one of the hottest goalies in the league recently, winning nine of his last 11 starts. All nine of those wins have come in regulation.
Flyers
The Philadelphia Flyers enter tonight on the second half of a tough back-to-back after losing in overtime to the Carolina Hurricanes.
Philadelphia has been one of the worst teams in hockey over the past few months, as it has now lost five straight and 18 of its last 20 games.
Of those 18 losses, 13 of them have been in regulation. Anyone that watches the Flyers at all can see the lifelessness this group has when they play, and I find it hard to believe that they will find a spark on the second half of a back-to-back.
Analytics ha e really displayed how poor the Flyers have been this season. Philadelphia ranks 25th in the league in 5-on-5 expected goals for per 60 minutes (xGF) and 30th in 5-on-5 expected goals against per 60 minutes (xGA).
We are unsure of the goalie situation for Philadelphia in this one. Carter Hart got an eye infection and is questionable to be able to play.
This development means that if he is unable to go, then Martin Jones will have to start for the second straight game, or they will have to start Kirill Ustimenko in his first-ever NHL game against the strong Blues offense.
No matter which option plays out, all of these scenarios benefit St. Louis.
Blues vs. Flyers Pick
This is a do-not-overthink-it game for me. The Flyers are an absolute dumpster fire right now, while the Blues are trending upward.
The questionable goalie situation for the Flyers also strengthens the Blues' chances tonight, and I think they will cruise to a victory in Philadelphia.
Pick: St. Louis Blues 3-Way ML (-130) | Play up to (-140)
