The Metropolitan Division's seventh-place Philadelphia Flyers travel to Detroit to take on the Atlantic Division's fifth-place Red Wings. This is the third meeting between these two teams this season andd Detroit has won by at least two goals in both matchups.
Will Detroit cover the puck line once again, or can Philadelphia keep It close this time around?
Flyers Soared Down the Standings
The Philadelphia Flyers begin their five-game road trip at Little Caesars Arena. The Flyers have struggled mightily when priced as a road underdog as they are 0-11 over their last 11 games in such instances.
Philadelphia has failed to cover the puck line in seven of those losses. Entering a rebuilding period, the Flyers have looked lifeless on the ice this season, and the metrics back that up.
This year, Philadelphia ranks just 26th in five-on-five expected goals for per 60 minutes (xGF) and 31st in five-on-five expected goals against per 60 minutes (xGA). Without captain Claude Giroux for the rest of the season, I expect the Flyers to keep spiraling down the standings.
Carter Hart is the projected starting goaltender for the Flyers and has struggled when playing away from home. Over his last five road starts, Hart is 0-5 with a mere 0.880 save percentage.
Red Wings Have Solid Track Record at Home
The Detroit Red Wings return home following a four-game road trip that did not go as planned as they went just 1-3. However, returning home against a poor Flyers team is exactly what this young group needs for a bounce-back game.
Detroit is an impressive 7-2 this season when priced as a favorite on home ice, and this is a good matchup to make It 8-2. Five of those seven wins have come by at least a two-goal margin.
It is not surprising that the Red Wings are 2-0 against Philadelphia this season as Detroit ranks higher than Philadelphia in both five-on-five expected goals for per 60 minutes (xGF) and five-on-five expected goals against per 60 minutes (xGA). Alex Nedeljkovic is the projected starting goaltender for Detroit in this matchup and will look to keep his solid play going.
Over his last seven games, Nedeljkovic boasts a 0.907 save percentage. I expect the Red Wings' blue line to keep Philadelphia in check and hopefully keep the pressure off of Nedeljkovic.
Flyers vs. Red Wings Pick
I do not see any edge that the Flyers could have in this matchup. Hart has struggled in net when playing on the road, the Flyers are one of the worst teams statistically and analytically and the Red Wings have cruised by them in both of their previous meetings this season.
I like Detroit to not only win but to cover the -1.5 puck line as well.
Pick: Detroit -1.5 (+165 | Play down to +140)
