The last time these two teams met, it did not go very well for the New York Rangers, but since that game, the Devils have gone 1-4-1, and the Rangers have gone 4-1-1.
The Rangers took the Devils lightly after going up 2-0 early in the last meeting, and New Jersey ended up coming back and winning by a score of 7-4. The Rangers learned their lesson and will not let a game against a weak opponent slip away again.
New York Rangers
The Devils had not been a concern for the New York Rangers until the last meeting between the two teams. Dating back to last season, the Rangers had won the last eight out of nine meetings against New Jersey. The Devils embarrassed them on March 22nd in this very building, and now the Rangers are coming in looking for payback.
Right now, the Rangers are on a rare two-game losing streak after getting shutout by the Islanders on Friday night and having their comeback fall short against the Flyers on Sunday night.
One area of concern is the Rangers' Power Play. Since Ryan Strome got hurt, they have only converted on two out of their last nine man-advantage opportunities, and they are zero for their last six. Despite the lack of success lately, they still have the third-best Power Play in the entire NHL, but the Devils' Penalty Kill is solid enough to pressure them.
Igor Shesterkin should once again be in the blue paint for the Rangers. Some may say that he has looked off lately, but he has still put up solid numbers. He just hasn't been the superhuman we got used to watching for most of the season. In his last two starts he has allowed six goals on only 44 shots combined.
The Rangers need him to be at his best.
New Jersey Devils
It's no secret that wins have been hard to come by for the New Jersey Devils this season. They're currently on a three-game losing streak and have given up a whopping 19 goals in those three games combined. In fact, things have gone so poorly for them that they had a four-goal lead against the Florida Panthers erased and ended up losing in overtime 7-6.
This is going to be the Devils' third game in four nights, so we might see some fatigue, but even though they might not have fresh legs, they always get up to face the New York Rangers.
A cause for concern is that Jack Hughes, their superstar forward, is questionable to play after taking a tough collision in the team's last game on Sunday. Hughes tried to play through it but eventually left the game with a lower body injury. Not having Hughes in the lineup would be a huge loss for them considering that he had two goals in the last meeting between these two teams.
The Devils' starting goalie should be Nico Daws, who has basically become the top guy since Mackenzie Blackwood got hurt. Daws has been decent but not great, and he will have a tough test against the Rangers.
Rangers vs. Devils Pick
The Rangers know not to take the Devils lightly after what happened on March 22nd. They did not play their best in their last game against the Flyers, but there are still a ton of positives to take from that game. They erased a two-goal deficit in the third period after they scored two goals in 12 seconds to tie the game up with under five minutes in order to secure a point.
If Hughes is out of the lineup for the Devils, that is a huge advantage for the Rangers since the Devils offense flows through number eighty-six.
I think this will be a great bounce back effort from Shesterkin, and the Rangers will come into New Jersey and take two points. Expect the Rangers to win this game straight up.
Pick: New York ML (-155)
