The Wednesday TNT doubleheader opens with the New York Rangers hitting the road to take on the Philadelphia Flyers in a Metropolitan Division clash.
The last meeting between these teams resulted in the Flyers picking up a 4-3 road win.
So, will we see another high-scoring affair between these franchises or can the goaltenders have better success this time? Let’s take a look to see where we can find some betting value.
New York Rangers
The Rangers enter this contest on the second half of a back-to-back set following Tuesday's 4-2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes. New York has now seen six or more total goals scored in seven of its last 11 games.
Since the Rangers are playing consecutive days, we can expect backup goaltender Alexandar Georgiev to get the start. He’s a massive step down from regular starting goaltender and Vezina Trophy favorite Igor Shesterkin, as he possesses a mere 0.894 save percentage this season.
The total goals scored have reached at least six in seven of Georgiev's last nine starts. On the other hand, New York's offense has really picked It up of late.
In their last 11 contests, the Rangers are averaging 3.45 goals scored per game. New York's power play has also been stellar all season, ranking second in power-play percentage, which could be a big problem for a Philadelphia team that sits just 23rd in penalty kill percentage.
Philadelphia Flyers
The Flyers also enter this matchup on the second half of a back-to-back set, as they got steamrolled in Tuesday’s 9-2 loss against the Washington Capitals. Their matchup against Washington was yet another high-scoring game, as there have been six or more total goals scored in nine of their last 11 games.
Since Carter Hart was injured against the Capitals, we can expect backup goaltender Martin Jones to get the start. Jones has really struggled of late, allowing three or more goals in five of his last six appearances and posting a troubling 0.883 save percentage during that span.
Philadelphia's defense will be of absolutely no help to Jones' cause either, ranking just 29th in the league in 5-on-5 expected goals against per 60 minutes. While its offense has also been pretty awful, it has seen a recent increase in productivity.
In their last 10 games, the Flyers are averaging 3.1 goals scored. This matchup could be a chance to keep the scoring going since Philadelphia will be facing Georgiev instead of Shesterkin.
Rangers vs. Flyers Pick
Just like the last matchup, I like this game to deliver a lot of goals. We have backup goaltenders projected to start, both of whom have been very underwhelming all season.
I would stay away from the over if the total gets up to 6.5 before puck drop.
Pick: Total Over 6 Goals (-115 | Play to -125)
